Indication |
Culture of intravascular devices should be limited to patients who have laboratory confirmed bacteremia or who appear clinically septic.

Physiology |
Intravascular devices are used to provide continuous vascular access for a variety of therapeutic and diagnostic purposes. Their use in individuals with serious underlying illness and they penetrate the integument and increase the risk of infection.

Normal Range |
Roll plate cultures: < 15 colonies, sonicated specimen < 10 4 colonies.

I.V. catheter tip, foreign body, blood collected through catheter.
