Indication Culture of intravascular devices should be limited to patients who have laboratory confirmed bacteremia or who appear clinically septic.
Physiology Intravascular devices are used to provide continuous vascular access for a variety of therapeutic and diagnostic purposes. Their use in individuals with serious underlying illness and they penetrate the integument and increase the risk of infection.
Normal Range Roll plate cultures: < 15 colonies, sonicated specimen < 10 4 colonies.
Sample I.V. catheter tip, foreign body, blood collected through catheter.
Test Method Roll plate semiquantitative cultures, Quantitative sonication method, Comparative quanitiaive cultures.
